Martin Riseley and Diedre Irons

Martin Riseley and Diedre Irons

We welcome Martin Riseley, recently appointed Head of Strings at Victoria University, who performs for us for the first time, with our longtme friend, Diedre Irons.

Schubert’s brilliant Rondo is followed by Stravinsky’s Divertimento for Violin and Piano. Based on his ballet ‘The Fairy’s Kiss’, he used as his inspiration songs by Tchaikovsky, readily evoking the style of Russian folk music with sweet, delicate melodies and sequential repetitions.

John Corigliano’s complex and infinitely fascinating Sonata is a tour de force for the violin. Its slow movement contains some of the loveliest and most delicate sounds in contemporary music.

A selection of small but perfectly formed works by that Viennese musical charmer Fritz Kreisler complete this exciting programme.
