Aroha Emsemble (string trio)

Aroha Emsemble (string trio)

Members of the Aroha Quartet – Haihong Liu (violin), Zhongxian Jin (viola) and Robert Ibell (cello) perform as the Aroha Ensemble. They invite us to expand our musical horizons with three less frequently heard masterworks for violin, viola and cello.

Chinese-born NZSO first violinist Haihong is a graduate of the prestigious Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in the People’s Republic of China, where she won the China National Chamber Music Competition in 1995 with the Beijing String Quartet. After teaching violin and chamber music at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music of Guangzhou, Haihong emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 2001, initially joining the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as sub-principal first violin, and moving to the NZSO in 2002.

Zhongxian is graduate of Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Canton, China and taught for 16 years as a professor of violin and chamber music in the Xinghai Conservatory of Music before moving to NZ. He played frequently with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, the Xinghai Symphony Orchestra, and as the core member of the Quartet Star, with which he enjoyed giving concerts and masterclasses throughout China and major cities in UK, Austria, France, and Germany.

Robert Ibell was born in Dannevirke but received much of his music training in London, studying cello with Tania Hunt, Derek Simpson and Christopher Bunting. He played at music schools and in masterclasses (where his teachers included Alexander Baillie, Steve Doane, Anner Bylsma and Steven Isserlis), taught, gave recitals and played in professional and amateur orchestras. Since 1993 Robert has been a member of the NZ Symphony Orchestra. He is also an experienced chamber musician including as the cellist of the Nevine Quartet. He also plays in contemporary music group Stroma and is a recording artist for RNZ Concert.
