Sunday 13 July - Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet - formerly Antithesis Quintet

Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet - formerly Antithesis Quintet

New and Old from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres

This concert was to have been presented by the Antithesis Quintet, founded in 2010 by New Zealand clarinettist Anna McGregor when she was studying and working in Sweden. However, due to an injury to one of the string players, the original ensemble are unable to tour. The replacement ensemble, the Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet, includes Anna McGregor and Sofie Sunnerstam (violin) from the Antithesis Quintet and is notable, not only because of the experience of the string players who are the lead players in the Dalasinfoniettan, Sweden, but also because it now includes another New Zealander, Manu Berkeljon (violin). The other members are Anders Norén (viola) and Tomas Blanch (cello).

The programme has also changed – it features Brahms’ wonderful Clarinet Quintet, which ranks as a great masterpiece alongside Mozart’s work for the same ensemble, as well as two newer works which offer a different sound world: Fjärran, meaning ‘far’ in Swedish, is a new commission from Wellington’s Ross Harris, and Purakaunui at Dawn, composed by Anthony Ritchie for Anna McGregor and Antithesis for their 2014 tour of New Zealand.

Find out more about Ross Harris and Fjärran on the SOUNZ website.
