This piano trio with a name inspired by the unique beauty and purity of the song of the Korimako/Bellbird comprises internationally renowned musicians, violinist Helene Pohl, cellist Rolf Gjelsten, both formerly with NZ String Quartet, and Michael Endres – piano. They are joined by NZSO member Nicholas Hancox on viola for the Brahms. Launched in Wellington late in 2025, these seasoned musicians have quickly made their mark on the chamber music scene with German-born pianist Michael Endres who is based in Canterbury.
They have been acclaimed for their ‘thoughtful musicality that reveals new insights into the music and a deep dedication to the expression of a wide range of musical styles and periods’.
Elizabeth Kerr, Five Lines.
The programme includes Switzerland-based New Zealander Kit Powell’s ‘Korimako’ which features clever use of birdsong and comic timing. Originally composed in 1998 for flute and piano, the composer has newly arranged the work for this trio. This will be a world première performance. There are also works by Beethoven, Tabea Squire, and a powerful Brahms piano quartet.
