Sunday 29 August - Heleen du Plessis and Terence Dennis (cello and piano)

Heleen du Plessis and Terence Dennis (cello and piano)

Heleen du Plessis and Terence Dennis are both staff members of the University of Otago.

While the Fauré and Chopin sonatas are well known, the two other works may be new for most audience members.

Peter Klatzow (1945 – 2021) was a South African composer noted for his innovative use of tonality, and integration of diverse cultural influences. Heleen describes his sonata as “an attractive, charming piece with lovely singing melodic lines, showing off a range of sonorities and registers of the cello.”

Franghiz Ali-Zadeh is an Azerbaijani composer who synthesizes Western classical modernist techniques with the Azerbaijani mugham art music.

Heleen du Plessis has established herself as one of the leading cellists and teachers in South Africa and in her adopted home, New Zealand, where she is Associate Professor of cello and music pedagogy at the University of Otago. Widely experienced as a recitalist, orchestra soloist and chamber musician, she enjoys an international reputation for her work on the bio-mechanics of music performance and injury prevention.

Her interdisciplinary project Cello for Africa combined the cello with African instruments, fusing multicultural musical styles to explore, perform, reinforce, and reflect diversity, creating a forum for cultural interaction.

Terence Dennis is pre-eminent among NZ collaborative pianists. He has regularly partnered international and leading NZ artists in recital. Of note is his extensive recital collaboration with Dame Kiri te Kanawa at Windsor, UK, throughout Australia, Hawaii and Japan. Distant Beloved, his 2019 CD for Decca with tenor Simon O’Neill, won the Aotearoa Music Awards Classical category.

He has been official pianist for the Song Quest since 1991. Terence Dennis is Blair Professor of Music at the University of Otago, was appointed to the NZ Order of Merit in 2004 and is a Fellow of the NZ Academy of Humanities and the Royal Society of NZ.
