| Emma Sayers is from Wellington and has studied at Victoria University of Wellington and at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in in Budapest. Richard Mapp has studied at the University of Otago and in the UK. Both have taught at the NZ School of Music and have performed widely as soloists and in chamber music. They are especially well known for their piano duet concerts.
For this concert, we have two exciting piano duets by Stravinsky followed by two Brahms solo piano works.
The piano duet will be joined by four experienced opera singers – Lisa Harper-Brown, Maaike Beekman, Richard Greager and Simon Christie – for Brahms’ Liebeslieder waltzes. This romantic song cycle was written about love, and out of love, for Brahms, as usual, was head-over-heels in love with Clara Schumann, whose attention (and romantic interest) he is reputed to have been trying to entice with this musical bouquet. The waltzes were an instant, tremendous success, when published in 1870 have remained popular ever since.
