| Glowing reviews, enthusiastic audiences and invitations to return greeted the New Zealand String Quartet’s thirteenth concert tour to Europe, North America and Curacao in late 2008. As members of New Zealand’s most travelled classical ensemble, violinists Helene Pohl and Douglas Beilman, violist Gillian Ansell and cellist Rolf Gjelsten also thrill their audiences at home with their dramatic energy, beauty of sound and imaginative programming.
In their 2009 Sunday Concert they perform with Hiroshi Ikematsu, Principal Double Bass of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since 2006. Hiroshi studied at Toho Gakuen School of Music and with Gary Karr. He was the Principal Bassist in the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo before taking up his current position.
