Aroha String Quartet

Aroha String Quartet

Founded in 2004, this well-known versatile Wellington-based quartet is Haihong Liu – violin, Konstanze Artmann – violin, Zhongxian Jin – viola, and Robert Ibell – cello.

Aroha Quartet presents a programme titled “Heart” of heartwarming music from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. It begins with a sparkling piece by the father of the string quartet, Josef Haydn, followed by the Ross Carey’s lovely Toccatina.

American composer Samuel Barber wrote to a friend in 1936 “I have just finished the slow movement of my quartet today (and) its a knockout”. Like a huge inbreath and outbreath, this amazing piece (often performed by string orchestra as the Barber Adagio) is flanked by two wonderful outer movements.

Beethoven’s glorious String Quartet No 10 covers the range of human moods from tranquil calm, to restlessness, heartfelt outbursts and resolute determination. Its nickname, ‘Harp’, comes from the striking pizzicato section in the first movement.
