Sunday 21 August - Meler Ensemble

Meler Ensemble

We haven’t heard the Meler Ensemble before, but some of its members are well known to us. Wellingtonians Amanda and Aleisha Verner are fast making their mark on the international music scene. Violist Amanda currently attends the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music and cellist Aleisha was awarded an Irene Diamond Fellowship, enabling her to study at the Juilliard School.

Violinist Josef Spacek and pianist Andrew Tyson join them in a programme of works by Handel, Janacek, Piazzolla and Brahms. Czech-born Josef was winner of the 2009 Michael Hill International Violin Competition. Andrew Tyson, a graduate of the Curtis Institute, is currently studying at the Juilliard School. He was a prizewinner in both the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition and the National Chopin Competition of the United States. He was a semifinalist in the 2010 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, his first venture into the world of international competitions.

Note: The pianist is different from the one advertised in our 2011 Sunday Concerts Brochure.
