Ashley Brown (cello), Sarah Watkins (piano), Justine Cormack (violin) are three born and bred Kiwis, three Doctors of Music, who have performed together for over 14 years weaving their instruments into one seamless unit. They have been called a ‘national treasure’ and ‘New Zealand’s most indispensable ensemble’. These musicians are as renowned for their daringly eclectic programmes and propensity for colourful cross-genre collaborations as they are for their warm Kiwi spirit. They smash preconceptions of classical music being ‘stuffy’ or ‘intimidating’ by presenting it in a fresh and approachable way, appealing to a wide range of listeners.
Every NZ Trio performance is intimate, dynamic and engaging – homage to the importance they place on the relevance of live music in an increasingly digital world. Having performed throughout New Zealand, Australia, Asia, South America, US, Europe and Scandinavia, their artistry is world-class and their commitment to NZ composition is unfailing, averaging three new commissions each year, showcasing NZ music around the globe.
Recent international highlights include a debut at the 2015 Darwin Festival in Australia, and an 8th return tour to China, in a series of public concerts and special performances celebrating the life and music of the late NZ composer, Jack Body.
